About Us

Wright’s Plastering is owned and operated by Brian K. Wright. We've been serving the residential plastering needs in the Roanoke Valley for over 30 years.  Due to the lack of skilled plaster contractors in the Roanoke Valley that will bid on and do small to mid-size plastering jobs and repair work we are in high demand. Specializing in interior 3-D textured designs, small plastering jobs, new rooms and additions, plaster & drywall repairs, and synthetic stucco repairs, which makes 95% of my work being repairs and custom design work.  I’ve spent many years doing repair work and have perfected this process. Repair work is in big demand since the larger companies don’t like the smaller jobs. I provide our customers with a level of professionalism, expertise, and quality that is unsurpassed in the plastering industry today.

Plastering has been handed down from generation to generation in my family. I learned the trade from my uncle who was owner of J. W. Clay Plastering in the early 1960’s through 1992. I began working for him in October 1982. J. W. Clay Jr. was one of the best skilled plasterers of his time, in the Roanoke Valley. I worked for J.W. Clay Jr. about 10 years and he taught me the skills of the trade that you don’t share with anyone else. Finishing drywall or plaster requires a highly skilled contractor with many years of experience. The quality that Wright’s Plastering puts in their repairs & plastering jobs is second to none. Wright’s Plastering will come out and look at the plastering work on time and give you a free estimate. The estimate includes labor and materials to do the work.  When working on the job we are in clean uniforms, we cover the floors in the work area. We clean up after the work is done and on small jobs we dispose of all excess materials.

Modern plastering systems have replaced the old traditional wood lath with gypboard sheets. Veneer plaster isn’t a new material, it was invented in 1888 and patented in 1894 by Augustine Sackett. The first company to perfect and manufacture sheetrock panels and plaster was the United States Gypsum Company in 1916 and the L. J. Kennedy Trucking Company in Kearny, New Jersey began delivering the sheetrock panels & plaster for the United States Gypsum Company.  This made safe, affordable high-quality housing a reality for millions of people. It was a new way to finish the walls and ceilings in new homes and offices across America. The basic ingredients for plaster and sheetrock were here when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but it took foresight, wisdom and vision by the proud people of the United States to fully utilize the potential of this miraculous mineral in its advancement of quality building materials. In 1925 cloth mesh tape for plaster was invented to prevent cracking and in 1928 a 16 in. x 48 in. rocklath board was made. Then in the early 1950’s the first 4-foot x 12-foot x ½ in. gypsum wallboard was developed for plaster and drywall and is still used today.

Now there are 27 wallboard manufacturing plants, 13 joint treatment manufacturing facilities, 11 paper mills and 21 gypsum mines and quarries in the United States today.

But it’s only in the last several years that manufacturers have put together systems based on its use. There are many types of gypsum board and plaster and each has it’s own purpose.  Modern plastering systems consist of blue board and high-strength veneer plaster for a one-coat finish. We tape and trowel on a thin (3/32 in.) seamless surface that’s far stronger and harder than the sheet rock itself. Finishing the sheet rock is next.
